What is adoption like for AI plugins and connectors?
· 5 min read
If I build an MCP connector, what kind of usage can I expect?
Adoption is better than we expected for connectors that rank near the top. A connector in Claude's top 100 gets millions of tool calls a month, and the biggest have a million or more monthly users. Usage drops fast below about #200, and almost all of the numbers come from apps that sell to businesses and developers. Of the 26 companies that have shared a number, only Canva and Fitness AI Connector have mostly consumer audiences.
What do the numbers in this post count?
Neither ChatGPT nor Claude publishes usage data for its plugin and connector stores. So we compared two things:
The two do not measure the same thing. One very active user can make thousands of tool calls a day, so treat every number here as an order of magnitude. We use Claude rank because ChatGPT's directory order is fuzzier: OpenAI says it mixes conversion, active usage and retention.
How many tool calls does each Claude rank get?
Seven companies shared a monthly tool-call number and have a Claude rank. When we plot them on log scales, they fall close to a straight line: about ten times fewer calls for every ten times further down the rankings.
Show the numbers and sources
| App | Claude rank today | MCP calls a month | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sentry | #37 | 50M | 50M requests a month, July 2026 (counts requests, not only tool calls) |
| monday.com | #12 | 35.5M | 35.5M MCP calls in September 2026 |
| Context7 | #56 | 10M | 10M+ MCP calls in September 2026 |
| Miro | #16 | 6M | On track for 6M MCP calls in September 2026 (a projection) |
| Resend | #140 | 3M | 3.0M MCP calls in September 2026 |
| Sanity | #201 | 1M | Over 1M tool calls a month, August 2026 |
| Port | #1,092 | 125K | 125K MCP tool calls a month, April 2026 |
Read off the chart, here is roughly what each rank is worth:
Two of the seven numbers are not exact matches. Sentry counts all requests, not only tool calls, and Miro's September number is a projection.
The kind of app explains most of the spread around the line. Developer tools run inside coding agents that call them over and over, so Sentry gets more calls than monday.com despite a lower rank: its 50 million monthly requests come from "thousands of users" (Sentry). Work tools get fewer calls per person. Atlassian sees about five agent actions a day for each monthly user (Atlassian).
How many people use a top connector?
Fewer companies shared user numbers, and each one counts users differently. The top of the list is in the hundreds of thousands to millions of people, and the bottom is in the hundreds:
| App | Claude rank today | Users | What it counts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slack | #8 | 1M | Everyone who used its MCP server in its first six weeks |
| Atlassian | #40 | 1M+ | Monthly active MCP users |
| Dropbox | #50 | 150K+ | Users who connected its Claude and ChatGPT integrations, as of August 2026 |
| HeyCounsel | #1,532 | 111 | Installs of its Claude connector, as of September 2026 |
Because the counts differ, the user numbers do not line up with the rank. Atlassian ranks below Slack even though its number is a monthly one, and Slack's covers six weeks.
How fast is adoption growing?
Adoption is growing quickly. The two companies that shared monthly numbers grew their tool calls 60% to 100% every month: Resend went from 107K in April to 3.0M in September (Resend), and monday.com went from 256K last November to 35.5M this September (monday.com).

Ramp's weekly MCP users grew 10 times in three months (Ramp). The growth is not only in Claude: Miro says Claude made up 65% of its MCP usage in August, with ChatGPT second and growing fast (Miro).
What if my brand isn't a household name?
Smaller apps have shared business results instead of usage. Three of these four are ranked only in ChatGPT, so they are not on the Claude chart above:
| App | Store and rank today | What they got |
|---|---|---|
| BlitzReels | ChatGPT #333 | 1,200+ new users in its first 9 days |
| MagicPath | ChatGPT #376 | $500K in new annual revenue in its launch week |
| Lead Recorder | Claude #1,774 | 100 new active users in 24 hours after approval |
| Mondovo | ChatGPT #6,678 | 18 signups in a week from its app listing alone |
Our favorite: none of Mondovo's 18 new signups had ever seen its website. The app directory was the whole funnel.
Why is a connector launch more like an App Store launch than SEO?
Because the stores rank you on usage, and the rank decides who finds you. A small brand will not pass Google Drive on Claude's most-used list. But Claude also has a Trending page for the fastest-growing connectors and a list of new ones, and ChatGPT's order mixes in usage and retention. Growth after launch is the lever a small brand controls.
Brands already know how to do this for mobile apps. They put "Download our app" on the website and email every active user. Most connectors launch without either, as if people will find them on their own.
So, what should you do?
Use rank to size the opportunity. Look at where apps like yours rank on Claude and read off the order of magnitude from the table above. A connector around #200 should expect about a million tool calls a month, and one around #1,000 about a tenth of that.
Push your current users to connect at launch. Early usage lifts your rank, a higher rank gets you found, and being new is your best chance to reach Trending.
Have onboarding ready on day one. BlitzReels had 5 users connect its ChatGPT app on day one, 52 signups a day soon after, and 233 on day six (BlitzReels). The burst comes with the launch.
Methodology
We searched X (full-archive search), LinkedIn, earnings call coverage, press releases and company blogs for numbers a company published about its own MCP server, Claude connector or ChatGPT app. We left out servers that are not in the ChatGPT or Claude stores. Ranks come from our daily crawl on October 20, 2026. The numbers come from different months and count different things, so treat everything here as an order of magnitude. Every number links to its source in our usage table.
