Connector
Lets an AI assistant use another service: read your data there or take actions in it. ChatGPT now calls them plugins.
A connector links an AI assistant to another service. With the Gmail connector, ChatGPT or Claude can search your inbox and draft replies. With the Zillow connector, it can search listings. The assistant decides when to call it, based on what you ask.
Most connectors are MCP servers: the service publishes a list of tools (search_listings, create_event), each with a name and a description, and the assistant picks the right tool for the request. Some connectors also show interactive UI inside the chat, such as a map, a cart or a chart.
Each store uses its own word, which is a big part of why this space is confusing. We say connector for the general idea and use the store's word when we talk about one store.
